Yemeni Poetry

In Yemen like in other countries in the middle east, poetry held a special place in people's lives. Poetry was a medium through which the people would express themselves. It was also the language of discourse between the knowledgeable. Every village in Yemen had it's own poet, someone who expressed the feelings of the community and represented the community in special occasions, as in weddings and receptions.

Poetry developed in the hands of the people who were educated and pursued poetry as an art. Poetry in Yemen adapted various styles, imitating the old and the new waves of self expression.

The Yemeni poetry, until recently, seems to have emphasized two aspects 1) the spiritual connection with God, and 2) and the romantic poetry common to all societies. The political struggle of the 20th century led people to a new aspect of poetry. Revolution became the topic for many of the Yemeni poets in the 20th century.
